Canvas Basics Workshop

Build your Canvas course with confidence! This one-hour workshop provides an overview of the basic features, dynamic tools, and functionality that allows you to build and support engaging courses.
At the end of this session, you will:

  • Navigate your Canvas Course.
  • Upload your course syllabus
  • Begin Grades setup using the Assignment Index Page.

Following the workshop, learn about other opportunities in which Distance Learning and Instructional Technology staff members can further support you in the use of Canvas to engage learners.

Building Courses in Canvas

This fast-paced introductory workshop will prepare you with the basic skills needed to get started building courses in Canvas, and presents ways to integrate innovative learning technologies into your courses. It is highly recommended that this course is taken prior to taking Managing Courses in Canvas. 

At the end of this two-hour, face-to-face session, you will know how to:

  • Navigate your Canvas Course.
  • Setup Grades using the Assignment Index Page.
  • Organize modules and add course content.
  • Upload your course syllabus
  • Use the HTML Editor to create accessible course content.
  • Setup your course Home Page.
  • Access and understand the Manage Files storage.
  • Embed videos as content.

Following the workshop, schedule a consultation with a Distance Learning and Instructional Technology staff member for further support in the use of Canvas to engage learners.

Managing Courses in Canvas

 This fast-paced intermediate workshop expands upon the fundamentals learned in the Building Courses in Canvas workshop, and introduces additional tools and innovative technologies useful for productivity and management.

At the end of this two-hour, face-to-face session, you will know how to do the following:

  • Create Announcements to update students about timely course information.
  • Create discussions
  • Build Practice Quizzes, Graded Quizzes, or Graded and Ungraded Surveys.
  • Enable access to assignments for students with accommodations or extensions.
  • Use the Calendar to help students manage assignment due date.
  • Communicate with students using Inbox.

Advanced Tools in Canvas

This fast-paced advanced workshop builds upon the Building and Managing Courses in Canvas workshops, and introduces advanced tools focusing on student engagement.

At the end of this hour and half session, you will know how to do the following:

  • Use the Attendance tool to keep attendance records and allow students can track their absences.
  • Create and use the Rubrics to evaluation learning.
  • Communicate with students using Conferences
  • Organize students into Groups for projects or tasks.
  • Use collaborations to foster student engagement

Canvas Instructor Training (Online)

This ten week, fully online course will prepare you with the skills needed to build and manage courses in Canvas. Specifically geared toward online and hybrid teaching faculty, this course takes you all each of the innovative tools Canvas has to offer and presents best practices for their use in the online classroom. Strategies learned during this course can also prove to be invaluable when integrating Canvas into the traditional classroom.

Topics covered in this online course include:

  • Introduction to Canvas
  • Making Canvas Work for YOU!
  • Building your Course.
  • Managing Your Course
  • Communicating with Students
  • Encouraging Interaction
  • Feedback and Grading in Canvas

Participants are required to schedule two face-to-face or virtual meetings during this course with Distance Learning and Instructional Technology staff to cover essential elements of Canvas and to answer any questions you might have.
